Some projects are about a single structure. This one was about reshaping an entire outdoor lifestyle. For this Abu Dhabi villa, Cape Reed was commissioned to wrap the home in shade, furnish it with handcrafted timber pieces, and give the family — including the youngest members — a garden built for year-round outdoor living.
The result is a series of timber pergolas running the length of the villa’s poolside and entertaining areas, custom-built dining furniture, natural timber pole fencing for privacy and definition, and a dedicated wooden play area for the children. It’s a project that shows just how far natural timber can go in transforming a home from the inside out.

Creating Sustainable Shade Around Your Home
Abu Dhabi’s climate makes shade a necessity, not a luxury — but how you create that shade matters. Cape Reed built multiple pergolas around this villa, each positioned to follow the sun and shelter the spaces the family uses most: the poolside lounge, the outdoor dining area, and a quiet corner furnished with two handcrafted timber chairs and a side table.
Unlike synthetic shading systems, a timber pergola does more than block the sun — it filters it. The open lath roof structure lets light move and breathe through the space, softening harsh Gulf sunlight into a cool, dappled canopy rather than dense, flat shade. It’s shade that feels natural, because it is.
To complete the outdoor living areas, Cape Reed supplied bespoke timber furniture built to match the structures themselves: long communal dining tables with matching benches beneath the main pergola, and a more intimate seating set for relaxed afternoons. Every piece is crafted from the same sustainably sourced timber as the structures above it, so the whole space feels considered, natural and cohesive.
Timber pole fencing was also introduced along parts of the boundary, using staggered natural timber poles to create privacy and texture without the heaviness of a solid wall. It’s a simple detail, but one that turns a functional boundary into a design feature — soft, organic and completely in keeping with the rest of the garden.

Why sustainable shade matters:
- Reduces reliance on air conditioning by cooling outdoor spaces naturally
- Uses renewable, certified timber rather than manufactured or plastic alternatives
- Ages gracefully, developing character rather than wearing out
- Creates genuinely usable outdoor space for more months of the year

Wooden Play Structures: Outdoor Space Kids Can Grow Into
No family garden is complete without a space for children to be children — and this is where Cape Reed’s timber craftsmanship extends beyond shade and furniture into something a little more playful. For this villa, we designed and built a custom wooden play area, combining a covered play structure, a timber-framed swing set and connecting rope and climbing elements, all set within a soft sand play zone.
There’s a reason more families are choosing timber play structures over plastic, moulded alternatives. Natural wood doesn’t heat up under the sun the way synthetic materials do, making it a genuinely comfortable choice for the UAE’s climate. It’s also simply better to look at — a wooden play structure sits into a garden rather than sitting on top of it, blending with the same natural materials used throughout the rest of the outdoor space rather than competing with them.
Built with the same durability standards as our structural timber work, this play area is designed to handle years of climbing, swinging and imaginative play — giving children a place that’s genuinely theirs, without compromising the natural aesthetic the rest of the family enjoys.

A Garden Built Around the Whole Family
From quiet, shaded corners for the adults to expansive dining pergolas for entertaining, right through to a dedicated play area for the kids, this Abu Dhabi villa is a complete picture of what sustainable, timber-led outdoor living can look like. Every element — structure, furniture, fencing and play — was built from the same natural material, creating a garden that feels whole, not assembled.
If your outdoor space needs more shade, more life, or simply more reasons to spend time in it, Cape Reed can help you get there. Request your free consultation and let’s start designing your own natural retreat.
